Okay, poll time. How many people actually follow keep their New Year’s resolutions throughout the year? For the record, my hand is not up. For some reason, many people like myself have a tough time following through with their resolutions. After some thought I think the secret is in how resolutions are created. Here are a few New Year’s resolution tips to help all of us make New Year’s resolutions that we’ll keep.
Make Your Resolution Specific
This may be one of the most obvious New Year’s resolution tips but one of the most beneficial. The experts say that it is better to make your resolution specific with details rather than vague. For example, instead of saying, “I’m going to get more exercise in 2017,” say, “I’m going to workout three times a week in 2017.” A clear goal gives you something that’s measurable and makes it easier to meet. Plus, when you’re specific, you’re more likely to hold yourself accountable and keep your New Year’s resolution.
Make a Schedule
Similar to making your New Year’s resolution specific, make it real by putting it on your calendar and setting a reminder (or reminders). Let’s stick with the exercise/workout example, schedule the days you’re going to workout. If it’s on the schedule the excuse of not having time will disappear and this will lead you to keep your New Year’s resolution throughout the year.
Track Your Progress
Don’t just set your resolution and hope it works out. Set specific check-in points throughout the year to evaluate where you are with your New Year’s resolution. If you need to make changes to your schedule or your resolution, this would be the right time for adjustments and to get back on track.
